Jay Z’s commitment to students and Historically Black Colleges and Universities isn’t new. Last week his foundation kicked off their 12th annual week-long HBCU bus tour for prospective students from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

According to foundation’s website, the goal of the tour is to promote increased college attendance at these institutions of higher learning.

Under the guidance of Jay Z’s mother, Gloria Carter, who is president of the Shawn Carter Foundation, students travel by bus to visit 11 HBCUs from Washington, D.C. to Atlanta, Georgia. There, they are able to meet with admission counselors and past Shawn Carter Foundation scholars.

Beyond exposing participants to the unique culture and offerings at these institutions, the foundation also ensures the students are prepared to attend through a series of required preparatory workshops that cover ACT/SAT prep, interview skills, college essay writing and financial aid and scholarships.
