The University of Cincinnati College of Law announced the appointment of the first woman, and the first African American, to serve as assistant dean for the school’s admission and financial aid department.
Cassandra B. Jeter-Bailey is a Cincinnati native and a law school graduate. She first became interested in law while participating in the Summer Work Experience in Law pipeline program. The program, created by the Cincinnati Bar Association, helps to increase the representation of minorities in law school.
Jeter-Bailey previously worked as director of admissions for the JD and Graduate Law Programs at the Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio. In her current role, she will help serve as an ambassador for UC’s College of Law while being responsible for recruitment, admissions, enrollment and financial aid. She spoke to The News Record about her new appointment saying, “I am fulfilled by the opportunity to shape the next generation of exceptional l*awyers at Cincinnati Law — a first-rate public law school elevated by a leading urban public research university.”
Through her journey Jeter-Bailey has become far too aware of the challenges African Americans and women face in law. She hopes that her positioning will help to change that. “I hope that through my appointment, others can see a reflection of themselves and find inspiration to chase their dreams and become a leader in their desired field,” she said.
Jeter-Bailey’s goal is to develop strong relationships in order to attract a highly qualified and diverse pool of candidates for the College of Law. She will be replacing UC’s previous dean who held the position for 33 years.
