Almost 41-years after not allowing individuals from African descent to the priesthood, the Mormon church has elevated an African American to its highest level of leadership in the church.
Elder Peter Johnson was named a General Authority Seventy during the Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder-day Saints’ 2019 general conference.
According to Al.com, Johnson joined the church in 1986 at age 19. He is currently an accounting professor at the University of Alabama.
April has proven to be a barrier breaking month in religion. Just last week the Catholic Church made an African American the first archbishop of Washington; one of the most influential churchmen in the faith.
