Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back DeAngelo Williams is being hailed a hero after his generous act of kindness and compassion came to light.
Since 2015, through the DeAngelo Williams Foundation, he has been covering the bill for over 500 women to get their mammograms screenings at hospitals in Pittsburgh, Memphis, Jonesboro, and Charlotte.
Williams, who lost his 53 year old mother, Sandra Hill, to breast cancer back in 2014, is a vivid supporter of awareness towards the disease. He has also lost four aunts to the same cancer, so has more cause than most to commit his life to foiling it.
In the hope of doing his bit, the 36-year-old has reportedly been sponsoring a free mammogram screening in honor of his mother through the “53 Strong for Sandra” program.
The foundation sponsors mammograms for 53 women at each event, with the aim to eventually host a free mammogram screening in every state.
In a piece he wrote for SI after his mother’s death, Williams wrote, “One day, we will defeat this disease that steals our mothers, our aunts, our sisters, our daughters and our wives before their time. Until then, when we face the last days of our loved ones’ lives, we should do so without fear. And until that final day comes, we have to fight, just as my mom did.”

“To be able to help all these women is amazing. This can be life-changing for these women. We are enabling them to get this care that no one should ever be denied or not have access to.” Williams told Today, in a statement.
